Moms with small children! Here are 5 Must-Haves

Do you daydream?  About the days before kids when you logged in a solid hour or more at the gym on a regular basis … or those uninterrupted 5 mile jogs or …you get the picture.  When we become MOMS many of us write off the opportunity to take time for ourselves. We think that because we can’t set aside an hour+ of CONTINOUS time a day that we should just accept the fact that we can’t workout and will never be fit and healthy again.

Then for many along comes baby #2.  This pregnancy is started with weight gain that is “left over” from the first pregnancy coupled with a decreased fitness level.  Soon there are a couple of very active small children demanding our attention and a high level of activity.  Now we are struggling with extra weight, decreased fitness levels, and sometimes depression.  In addition, we are modeling a lifestyle of inactivity for our children.

Moms with small children!  Here are 5 must-haves for your Health and Wellness!

  1. Don’t settle for inactivity!  Take advantage of small blocks of time!  5 minutes here..10 minutes there…7 minutes here..2 minutes here…6 minutes there.  That’s 30 minutes!  Moms are the best multi-taskers!  Take advantage of your talent!  You are making pasta and it needs to boil for 7 minutes.  That sounds like 2 sets of lunges, 1 minute plank, and 1 set of tricep dips on the kitchen chair to me!
  2. Be Creative and look for ways to be active with your kids!   Children by nature love to be active!  Walk or ride your bike to the park instead of driving.  Start talking walks or jogging with your children at a young age.  Most of the time they actually enjoy it!  Young children love to run and be chased! Take advantage of summer’s warm weather and long days to stroll the aisles of a farmers market, blow and catch bubbles, kick balls, and have impromptu dance parties!  Family walks and bike rides are a great way to spend an evening!
  3. Fuel your body and be mindful of what you are eating.  While making your child’s peanut butter and jelly sandwich, without thinking … you lick the knife.  A few minutes later you are serving oatmeal for breakfast and you take a bite to make sure it is not too hot.  Later you are making an afternoon snack of cheese and apples slices.  Without a thought you eat 2 slices of cheese.  The day continues.  Without even realizing it you can easily add an additional 100-150 calories/day.  Over a year this will equal 10-15 lbs of weight gain. Choose whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and non-processed food for you and your family!
  4. Your children can be the best motivators and they love to be involved!  I have been taking my little girl for a jog in my jog stroller from the day I got the OK from my ObGyn.  At 2 ½ her and I hadn’t been jogging for a few days and she asked me, “Mama, why aren’t you taking me for a ride in the stroller?”  I was actually feeling guilty for making her sit in the jog stroller for 45 minutes and was giving her a break, but now I know she missed it and was keeping me accountable!  I should also add that she does the downward dog much better than me!  Children love yoga and are amazingly good at it.  Try it!  Get in a plank position and I guarantee if you have small children they will either be climbing on your back or beside you making it look easy!
  5. It is nothing new to say that we are role models to our children, but this is also true of living a life of health, fitness and wellness too.  Choosing an active healthy lifestyle is not only the best choice for you and your family for the here and now, but it establishes a lifetime of healthy habits for your children.
